The Millionaire Next Door In One Sentence

I just finished The Millionaire Next Door by Thomas J. Stanley and William D. Danko and I found it to be a refreshingly fascinating look at money and the pursuit of wealth. While the main ideas of The Millionaire Next Door didn't seem entirely novel to me, the amount of research and findings did surprise me.

The Passionate Programmer - Soup up your career

I just finished reading a great book called The Passionate Programmer: Creating a Remarkable Career in Software Development written by Chad Fowler. It's primarily a collection of tips, ideas, and life philosophies about how to improve your career as a programmer by knowing what you really want, increasing your skills, and being passionate about what you do.

Geography Month!

This past month I studied the scintillating topic of Geography. While some may think of this as a very drab subject (and it is, mind you), I found some aspects of it to be fantastically lurid. Ok. That is an exaggeration. Interesting is the right word. My goals were to learn the location of most of the countries in the world and to gain a greater appreciation of the earth and nature.

At first, I thought the most enjoyable way to learn the countries was to memorize the Yakko's World song:

First Month of my Personal Learning Program

To me, continual learning is as necessary as relieving myself in the bathroom except it's not as messy when I don't do it. I can still be easily overwhelmed by the pursuit of knowledge, but, if I'm not increasing my intelligence in some systematic way every day, I feel like I am stagnating. In order to stave off this mental stagnation, I've created a personal learning program where I study a specific topic each month. The topics I would ultimately like to cover include:

  • Literature
  • Writing
  • Math
  • History
  • Geography

The Adventure Begins

One day, I'll look back at this first blog entry and think, "WTF? I sucked". But, right now, I'm feeling pretty good. My current plans for this blog are rather modest: post about the things that I have learned in my life in the past month, exposing my ignorance to the world, feeding the Google spiders just a bit more web-food so that they can, one day, develop artificial intelligence and take over the world, punishing all black-hat SEOs who tried to manipulate them.
